  You've made several decisions about your wedding, and now it's time to decide what kind of wedding cake you would like.

There are several factors you will need to consider when choosing your wedding cake, so let's look at some of those factors.

First, what flavor would you like your cake to be? There are many choices beyond the standard chocolate or vanilla. Butter cream, lemon, or cheesecake are also some other options. You can also choose each tier or level to be a different flavor, and this can be a fun choice.

You can let your imagination run wild here, your cake can be as complex or as simple as you wish.

When planning your cake, you'll need to take into consideration the following information...

How many guests are you planning to have?
Do you have a budget for your cake? If so, this may reduce your choices significantly.
How many tiers would you like?
Would you like to include your wedding colors in your cake?
Will you be using a pre bought cake top, such as a bride and groom?
And, will you be serving other desserts or will the cake be your main dessert?

Once you have the answers to these questions, you will be ready to start shopping for a cake.

Have you ever been to a wedding that had a really great cake? If eyes, don't hesitate to call your friends and ask who made their cake. This is a great way to find a baker. You can also visit bakeries and ask for samples and pictures of their cakes so you can evaluate each one. If you have an idea of what you want your cake to look like, take along a sketch or a picture from a magazine to help you describe it to your baker.

Whatever you choose, be sure to get all of your requirements in writing, so there is no room for mistakes. You should order your cake at least six weeks before your wedding date, to ensure that the date is available. It will take time to get the cake to your reception, and also to set up your cake, so your baker will need to be sure that he or she has enough time to do so.

Keep in mind that the initial cost quoted is usually only for the actual cake itself. There may be a fee for transportation and set up of your cake, as well as on site decoration. Be sure to discuss this with your baker before signing your contract.

SUMMARY

Take samples of your colors to leave with the pastry chef. Get it all in writing! Your pastry chef should take care of all details, including getting the cake to the reception hall and setting it up.

Remember that the more elaborate the cake, the higher the cost. Also, the number of guests will affect the price. You'll also have to pay for delivery and set-up and the cost of the cake top, flowers and embellishments which will adorn the cake.
